A young lady called Mrs Newman Knowlys, in white muslin dress with white embroidered neckline, vermillion Cashmere shawl with russet fringe, her upswept curling brown hair worn à l'antique
signed and dated on the reverse 'JCD Engleheart pinxit 21/1 1807'
on ivory
oval, 3 3/16 in. (81 mm.) high, gilt-metal frame with ribbon-tie surmount, the backing paper inscribed and dated 'Mrs Newman Knowlys by J. D. C. Engleheart 1807'

Newman Knowlys (1758-1836) was Recorder of London (the most senior permanent judge of the Old Bailey). He married Mrs Slope, a widow of Bath, on 15 August 1807. They had no children. Knowlys died on 5 January 1836 at his house in James Street, Buckingham Gate, London, and was buried in the Middle Temple vault. His wife died on 19 November of the following year.
