Notes

PROPERTY FROM THE HENRYK R. DE KWIATKOWSKI FAMILY COLLECTION

The present work is a variant of a picture that was in the Joel Collection, sold Christie's, London, 13 July 1984, lot 21 for £320,000. There are a number of differences, principally in the figures in the background. A larger version painted in 1825 was sold Christie's, London, 15 July 1988, lot 31A.

The 1825 Gold Cup at Doncaster was won by Lottery (initially called Tinker and bred by Mr. Richard Watt). Lottery, foaled in 1820 was by Tramp out of Mandane, and had an extremely vicious temper. Richard Watt was in fact on the point of having him shot when he was persuaded instead to sell him to Mr. Whittaker of Dowthorpe for 460 guineas in 1823.

The Doncaster Gold Cup was his finest race which he ran in superb style with G. Nelson up to win from Mr. F. Craven's Longwaist by half a neck, at odds of 13 to 8. Mr. Lumley's Falcon was third, followed by Figaro, Cedric and others.
