Gendall was born in Exeter in 1790. At a young age, he was sent to Sir John Soane in London who introduced him to Ackermann for whom he later worked. Ackermann encouraged Gendall to travel England making topographical drawings and also sent him to sketch in Normandy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1846 to 1863. In about 1830 he retired to Exeter where he drew Devonshire views
