Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Muller: A Pair of Works
The first signed J.H.H. Jr. and dated 1844 l.c., the second signed J.H.H. Jr. fecit and dated Aug. 29, 1844 l.c.
Each pen and ink on paper; each with mild toning, the first with writing from verso bleeding through to recto, the second with an area of restoration above the sitter's ear. Each framed.
Sight size of each approximately: 5 x 3-3/4 in (12.7 x 9.5 cm)

Note:
John Henry Hopkins immigrated to the United States from Dublin in 1801. According to the Hopkins family papers held by the University of Michigan, Hopkins was elected the first Episcopal bishop of Vermont in 1832 and served in that position for 36 years. He also penned the first book on Gothic architecture in the U.S., drafted the first plans for the University of the South, was a composer and wrote more than a dozen theological works.
