Notes

Gilbert Ireland was the son of John (d.1633) and Elizabeth Ireland. He was Member of Parliament for Liverpool and a strong adherent of Oliver Cromwell, by whom he was made Governor of Chester Castle and knighted for his services. He married Margaret, daughter and heir of Thomas Ireland of Bewsey, Warrington, Poulton and Hulme. She survived Sir Gilbert by two months and left Bewsey to Richard, son of Richard Atherton of Atherton, and Eleanor, his wife, sister to Thomas Ireland, of Bewsey. Gilbert Ireland's sister, Eleanor Aspinwall, was his heir and inherited his estates
