Description

albumen print on gold decorated mount with inscriptions in purple ink, U.S.G. and G. Survey, J.W. Powell in charge, the subject identified as A-sa-ma-ka-rid-i-hewl and Hillers Photo. Image 7" x 9.25" mounted, 13" x 14.75".

Photo taken on May 10, 1875 near Okmulgee, Indian Territory. Starving Elk was a prominent Cheyenne warrior. He was part of the epic march led by Little Wolf and Dull Knife from Indian Territory back to Montana in 1879-80. See Fowler, Don, The Western Photographs of John K. Hillers: Myself in the Water, pages 64-65.
