Description

Portrait painting of a young US Navy officer identified on the reverse to be John R. Coxe who was from Pennsylvania. Writing in the center states "an original portrait of John R. Coxe of the US Navy painted by his friend John Neagle Philad 1826." There is additional writing below which is illegible. Painting is signed lower left. Sight measures 17.25 x 13.5". Frame measures 22.25 x 18". Acompanied by a photo of the back of the canvas when off the stretcher.

A couple small spots of inpainting in the background. Repair in upper right hand corner. Plastic film has been applied to the back of canvas for preservation.
