Portrait of Charles Stirling, 4th son of William Stirling of Keir, bust-length in a dark grey coat and white stock oil on canvas 31 x 25 in. (78.8 x 63.5 cm.) in a Keir frame painted with Stirling armorials PROVENANCE William Stirling of Keir, later Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Bt. and by descent. Sold Christie's House Sale, Keir Mains, Dunblane, Perthshire, 22-24th May 1995, lot 472. (Also see lots 353 and 354) NOTES Charles Stirling (1771-1830) was the fourth son of William Stirling of Keir (1725-1793). He managed the firm of Somerville, Gordon and Co., a Glaswegian merchants trading in the West Indies. In 1806 he bought property at Kenmure which in 1816 he sold to his brother Archibald for œ40,000. During the alterations to Keir he was an important adviser to his brother James and in 1824 set off on the Grand Tour where he amassed a fine collection of paintings which passed to his nephew, Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Bt.
