Lot 626: John R. Johnston (American, b. 1820), "River Landscape", c. 1885; oil/canvas, 15" x 21", signed and

dated. Early Cincinnati painter. He was active as a landscape painter in Ohio in the 1840s-50s, before moving to Baltimore, where he established himself as one of Maryland’s leading portraitists in the 1860s-70s. He also worked with Henry Lewis on a panorama of the Mississippi River.
