Description

John S. O'Connor (British, 1913-2004) Kensington Palace, London, 1938 11/25, signed, titled, dated and numbered in pencil (in the margin) woodcut 16.5cm x 22.5cm and 'The White Fence', 1951, woodcut, 29.5cm x 20cm, both unframed (2). John Scorror O'Connor attended The Royal College of Art (1934-37), and his teachers included Eric Ravilious and John Nash. After serving in the air force during the Second World War, he continued a teaching career, started at Birmingham College of Art in 1937, and at the Bristol College of Art (1938-41), becoming principle of Colchester School of Art (1948-64). He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, and had solo shows at the Zwemmer Gallery (1955-68), and the New Grafton Gallery (from 1970), as well as having retrospectives at the Mackintosh Museum, Glasgow and the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich.
