Description

John Severinus Conway (Ohio, 1852-1925), "A Pond with Trees," c. 1900, oil on panel, unsigned (from the artist's estate), measures 9.25x9.25 inches, overall 12x12 inches framed in a carved and gilded frame, gallery labels to verso. PROVENANCE: Kennedy Galleries, New York; Godel & Company, New York. CONDITION: Good. John S. Conway was born in Dayton, Ohio, and moved to Chicago to study under Conrad Diehl at the Chicago Academy of Design. In 1881 Conway left for Paris and became a student at the Académie Julian under Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. In 1902 he returned to the United States and settled in Tenafly, New Jersey.
