Notes

The sitter, Judge Dr. William King, was famous as a writer and judge. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He graduated with a D.C.L in 1692. King was appointed judge of the admiralty court in Ireland in 1701 and keeper of the records of Birmingham Tower, Dublin Castle. After nearly ten years, King returned to England to write his Historical Account of the Heathen Gods and Heroes. After King died in the winter of 1712, his body was buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey.
