Description

John Templeton Lucas (English, 1836-1880): a portrait of Evelyn Francis English, depicting a young lady in white dress holding a tea tray on the grounds of Westwood House, Peterborough (now Peterborough School), oil on canvas, signed 'J T Lucas' and dated '1877' lower left, 90 by 70cm, framed, 101 by 80cm. Provenance: By descent to the vendor, great great grandson of Henry Hampden English. Notes: Henry Hampden English, (1814-1897) married Mary Frances Godfrey (1821-1905) of Duddington in 1844, Evelyn was their thirteenth child and fifth daughter; Henry founded English Brothers (Timber Merchants) at Wansford and later at Wisbech, and lived at Watlington Hall Norfolk prior to building Westwood House in 1857.
