Item Overview

Description

JOHN WILSON (1922 - )
La Calle.

Color lithograph on thin wove paper, 1951. 205x355 mm; 8x14 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 13/22 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce print.

We have not found another impression of this print at auction in 20 years. There is another impression in the collection of the artist, illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, In the Spirit of Resistance, African-American Modernists and the Mexican Muralist School, 1996, pl. 88, p. 163.

In 1950 Wilson received a John Hay Whitney scholarship to Mexico, and like Charles White and Elizabeth Catlett before him, he enrolled in La Esmeralda School in Mexico City to study mural painting. He also completed a small group of lithographs depicting Mexican manual laborers working in the streets.
