Description

View of Richmond Castle, with a woman washing clothes in the foreground signed 'J. Ewbank.' (lower right) oil on canvas 30 x 45 in. (76.2 x 114.3 cm.) NOTES Richmond Castle in Yorkshire was begun in 1071 and occupies an impressive cliff-top position overlooking the River Swale. Local legend records that a tunnel once led from the bottom of this cliff to a cavern where King Arthur and his knights sat around the Round Table. Ewbank was a pupil of Alexander Nasmyth and in 1826 was one of the founding members of the Scottish Royal Academy.
