John Wood Dodge (American, 1807-1893)

Portrait of George Washington. Signed and dated "1864" l.l., inscriptions on reverse reading "George Washington. Painted from a cast taken by the French sculptor Houdon 8 years before his portrait, by Gilbert Stuart, was painted. The hair from Stuart's portrait. The figure from living model. Painted by John W. Dodge. Miniature Painter 362 Broadway New York City Finished March 31st 1864." Watercolor and gouache heightened with gum arabic on paperboard, 13 1/4 x 10 1/2 in., in a later giltwood frame. Condition: Loss to u.r. corner.
