Notes

In addition to his royal collection of Arabians, King Louis XIV (1638-1715) gave many of his imported horses as gifts. As suggested by Wootton's inscription, the fortunate recipient of this fine animal may have been John, 5th Baron Petre or his brother Thomas (who was named the 6th Baron Petre in 1684).
