Lot 25: JONES (INIGO)

Note signed ("Inigo Jones"), concerning the sculptor Nicholas Stone ("...Mr Coferer Concidering the hast of this work – and that it must bee well donn the charge will bee more then ordenary so as I thinke you may allow Niccoles Stone 80£ for all the carving heear..."), written beneath the account submitted by Stone (of which a line is preserved), coming to a total of £86-10s, one page, cut from the foot of a folio sheet (115 x 185mm.), laid down, 9 April 1623

Nicholas Stone, the King´s Master Mason and sculptor of John Donne´s tomb in St Paul´s, had been employed by Jones on the Banqueting House, finished the year before. Provenance: Enys Collection, Bonhams, 28 September 2004, lot 432.
