Item Overview

Description

A wooded landscape with a huntsman and a shepherdess signed and dated 'JVHagen 1667' (JVH in monogram, lower left) oil on canvas 301/4 x 43 in. (77 x 109 cm.) PROVENANCE with John Mitchell, London, from whom acquired by the father of the present owner in 1939. NOTES A late work by the artist, this picture is typical of Van der Haagen's mature output from the 1660s. Much of his work from this period tends to be imbued with a heavy, darkened tonality with prominence given to the delicate execution of trees reminiscent of the forest landscapes of Jacob Isaacsz. van Ruisdael and his circle. Van der Haagen seldom painted his own figures and Ludolf de Jongh, with whom he collaborated on a number of occasions, may be responsible for the staffage in the present picture.
