Provenance: private collection, Vienna
Josef Platzer was specialised in scenes set in dungeons and in historical nocturnal scenes. He drew his inspirations from Piranesi's Carceri, but also from similar interiors by the two Steenwycks, Andrea del Pozzo, and the Galli Bibbiena. In Vienna he worked for the Imperial court and the nobility. In 1795 he was appointed Imperial chamber painter. In the Österreichische Galerie in the Vienna Belvedere there are two similar compositions by this artist.
