Notes

"The English-born Shaw was persuaded to emigrate to the United States by Benjamin West, the prominent American expatriate artist living in London. Arriving in America in 1817, he settled in Philadelphia where he established a reputation as one of the nation's first landscape painters. He frequently depicted the arrival of the first white explorers in the New World." (J.G. Sweeney, Masterpieces of Western American Art, New York, 1991, p. 16)
