xvi, [17]-416 pp. Large folding frontispiece copper-engraved map showing the Oregon Territory in 1838; copper-engraved plate showing the basaltic formations on the Columbia River. 7 1/2 x4 3/4, original blind-stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Fourth Edition.

This fourth edition has the same map as the 1838 first edition, which was the "earliest map of the Oregon interior with a pretense of accuracy." Wheat states that the map "represented a real advance, and it was made from personal observations." Spine ends and corners bumped, frays to edges (chiefly at ends), covers rubbed, minor stains to front cover, top half of front joint splitting; front hinge tender, mild foxing (also affecting map); else very good.
