Notes

This painting by Juan Bauzà is dateable circa 1865, the year after the artist entered the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. It represents a collage of a selection of the most celebrated Spanish, Flemish and Italian masterpieces within the collection of the Museo del Prado, Madrid, which had a profound effect on the artist's work. The paintings depicted within the scene represent (starting from top left): Portrait of Jacob Gaultier by Van Dyck; The Holy Family by Rubens; Danäe by Titian; Portrait of Count Hendrick van den Bergh by Van Dyck; Portrait of A Gentleman with a Gold Chain by Tintoretto; Portrait of Paul du Pont by Van Dyck; Portrait of Sir Endymion Porter and the Artist by Van Dyck; Portrait of Juan Martínez Montañés by Velázquez; Mercury and Argus by Velázquez; Jacob's Dream by Ribera; Saints Anthony Abbot and Paul by Velázquez; Pablo de Valladolid by Velázquez; Portrait of La Infanta Doña Margarita of Austria by Velázquez; The God Mars by Velázquez; Portrait of El Bufón called 'Don Juan de Austria' by Velázquez; and Portrait of El Infante Don Carlos by Velázquez.
