Portia and the three boxes. Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, framed in a wide gilt period frame overall apprx. 39" x 53". A scene from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" where the beautiful princess Portia, who is seeking suitor princes. The suitor must choose one of three boxes, one gold, one silver and one lead. If the person chooses the right box can win her hand. In this composition, a servant reveals the three boxes to Bassanio, who professes true love for Portia.
