Item Overview

Description

Jules-Prosper Legastelois (French, 1885-1931) "Bataille de la Marne", 1914, a bronze commemorative medal, the obverse with profile busts of General Joseph-Jacques Cesaire "Papa" Joffre (1852-1931), Commander Michel-Joseph Maunoury (1847-1923) and Commander Joseph-Simon Gallieni (1849-1916), with title legend and date "Septembre 1914", the reverse with a scene of the French army defending Paris and guided by the armed Marianne, marked on the lower edge "Bronze" and with the French cornucopia mint-mark in use after 1880, dia. 2-3/4". Note: The First Battle of the Marne, also known as the Miracle of the Marne, was fought from the 5th to the 12th of September, 1914. The Franco-British allied victory effectively ended Germany's month-long opening salvo of the war, halting their march into France at the very outskirts of Paris.
