Description

Julia Decker Pratt (American/New York, b. 1883), "Paine (John Howard Payne) House (Home Sweet Home), East Hampton, Long Island," c. 1920s, view includes the Pantigo Windmill, black and white woodblock print, trimmed and mounted by the artist, titled lower left, signed lower right, measures 9 x 6 inches to the edge of the image, overall in the frame it measures 16.50 x 12.50 inches. CONDITION: Good, no issues to print itself, a foxing spot at upper-left and some light staining to mounting paper at lower right. Originally a teacher in Buffalo, NY, she was fired from her position because of suspected Communist political sympathies in 1920. Pratt founded and served as the president of the Buffalo Salon of Independent Artists in the early 1920s, which was organized to "recognize modern art efforts." She later lived in New York City and spent time working in the Hamptons on eastern Long Island. She exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists in NYC in 1922, 1924-25, and was a member of the Buffalo Independent Artists; Buffalo Allied Artists Association; Chicago North Shore Artists; Society of Independent Artists; and the Buffalo Society of Fine Art.
