Item Overview

Description

JULIUS STOCKFLETH (1857-1935)
Wyk Fohr, 1922
Oil on canvas
8.25in. x 11.75in.
Signed, dated, and titled lower right

Julius Stockfleth immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1883 and settled in Galveston, Texas, two years later. For the two decades he was in Texas, Stockfleth produced a valuable record of early Galveston. His most important contribution were his portraits of ships passing through Texas and his record of the Galveston hurricane of 1900.

His paintings are naive in style, but possess bright and clear detail. In 1907, he returned to Germany where he lived out his life. This painting, dated 1922, is of his hometown birthplace, Wyk Fohr, on the German coast of the North Sea.
