Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652)
Born in the Spanish province of Valencia Ribera began his artistic training with Francesc Ribalta. Then he moved to Italy, where he studied the works by Italian masters such as Raphael and Caravaggio in Rome, Parma, Modena and Naples. Ribera was court painter to the Duke of Osuna and was appointed a member of the Accademia de San Luca in Rome in 1630. In 1644 the pope awarded him the Supreme Order of Christ. Jusepe Ribera, who was also known as ‘lo Spagnoletto’, the little Spaniard because of his origin, is considered next to Caravaggio as the most important naturalist of the Neapolitan school of painting.
