This work is number 3 from the sold-out edition of 5 + 1 AP.

Taken with a hidden camera while travelling by train, Hondius's Amman is an entrée into the everyday existence of young Muslim women. As cultural conventions rarely allow these women to travel unaccompanied or be photographed without the specific permission of their families, this candid image is a rarefied glimpse into a closed world. A crystallised moment of pensive reflection, the naturalness and ease of the sitter exist in isolated austerity.

Hondius studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague. His works have been exhibited widely in the US and Europe, including key groups shows, Netherlands Now: L'ecole du Nord at Maison Européene de la Photographie, Paris in 2006 and In Sight: Contemporary Dutch Photography from the Collection of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam at The Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. The recipient of numerous awards, including Amsterdam Art Fund Incentive Prize in 2002, Hondius is an active lecturer at art schools across the Netherlands. He lives and works in Amsterdam.
