Item Overview

Description

KANO TOUN MASUNOBU (1625 - 1694): BYAKUE KANNON. Ink and color on silk, ivory Jikusaki. Japan. PICTURE SIZE 91,5 x 33 CM; SCROLL LENGTH 172 CM
Delicate painting of the Byukue Kannon, mounted on a scroll. Only a true master like Toun, a studio leader, are able to reach beyond the technical difficulty of this ink composition and lead our attention directly to the blessing presence of the gentle goddess surrounded by a jagged cliff environment. Byakue Kannon is a special form of the well-known East-Asian Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara (in China, Guanyin). "Byaku-e" translates to "White clothing", hence, "White robed Kannon". Signature: MASUNOBU fude ??? Seal: SHOINSHI ???
