Notes

PROVENANCE:
By descent to the present owner through the Windham, Dalling, and Meade families at Earsham Hall, Bungay, Suffolk, from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

For a discussion of the Dalling family history, see lot 38.

Although the artist received his initial artistic education in his native Flanders, the style for which he is best known is that which he adopted after moving to Rome, where he is recorded as living in the parish of San Lorenzo in Lucina by 1671. In this city he was in much demand among such aristocratic patrons as the Chigi and Colonna and his reputation as one of the foremost still life painters of the day is reflected in the sobriquet, Carlo dei Fiori.
