Karl May was born in Bohemia and studied in Prague and Vienna. His association with Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter groups led to his work being included in the 1937 'Degenerate Art' exhibition in Berlin and later destroyed. He traveled to Canada in 1952 as an artistic adviser for the Canadian International Trade Fair and soon became a citizen, painting and exhibiting his work in Canada until his death in 1976.
