Description

"Two Jubilees," sepia ink and white paint, 147 x 216 mm, signed with initials. Matted and framed. Published: Punch , June 25, 1887. Charles Keene was a celebrated Punch cartoonists. "The technical perfection of these drawings no one has ever denied," the painter Walter Sickert said about Keene's work. "It is impossible to compose better; it is impossible to have a better line; it is impossible to have a better chiaroscuro." He has often been called the English Daumier. "Two Jubilees" may refer to the fiftieth anniversary of Queen Victoria's ascent to the throne and the book publication of Charles Dickens' The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (1837).
