Item Overview

Description

This world map is entitled Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula. A Pet. Kaerio and was done by Pieter van den Keere (Peter Kaerius). It was engraved by Janssonius. It was published in 1636 and this is considered the fourth state.

Van Den Keere's map was inspired by the work of Mercator and Blaeu and was first issued in 1608. The engraving work is actually better than Blaeu's map of 1606, and this map is considered rarer.

The border work is supremely decorative. It features allegorical representations of the sun, moon, and 5 planets at the upper border. At the lower border are vignettes of the seven wonders of the world. And to the left and right borders, the four elements and four seasons are represented. The map includes the elongated coast of NW America and South America leading to the "southern continent".

Jan Janssonius (1588-1664) was part of the golden age of Dutch cartography. He was a distinguished cartographer and publisher. He married into the Hondius family and worked closely with Henricus Hondius. The pair continued publishing Mercator's work where it would eventually be referred to as the Mercator-Hondius-Janssonius atlas.

Pieter van den Keere (1571-1646) was a Dutch engraver and cartographer. He was also son of the printer, Henric van den Keere. He established his business in London after he fled Gent from religious persecution. Keere married the sister of Jodocus Hondius and further enhanced his skills through this relationship to the Hondius family. Keere would sell his plates to Jansson in 1621.
