KILLIGREW, Anne (1660-85). Poems. London: for Samuel Lowndes, 1686. 4° (268 x 198mm). Mezzotint frontispiece portrait by Isaac Beckett after the author (frontispiece with skilfully repaired tear and lower inner corner torn away, affecting 3 letters, lightly browned throughout, a few small stains). Contemporary diced calf (front joint and head and tail of spine restored). Provenance: Frances Mary Richardson Currer (bookplate) -- old manuscript inscription on bottom of title, old manuscript corrections on G1 recto.

FIRST EDITION. "This copy is largely prized today as the first publication of Dryden's ode 'To the pious memory of the accomplisht young lady, Mrs Anne Killigrew, excellent in the two sister arts of Poesy and Painting' which Johnson, characteristically but not very justly, considered the noblest ode in our language.
