Nanga School, circa 1838
Kakejiku, a pair of scrolls, forming a diptych, in ink and colour on silk, the right depicting numerous herons gathering on a huge old willow tree by the lake, two flocks in a descending formation, the rest perched on the branches crying out to each other; the left depicting multiple crows at sunset gathering on an old bare tree in the mountain, some in flight, others perched on the tree, both signed Gyonen rokujyuni Kaan Busei hitsu (Painted by Kaan Busei at the age of sixty two) with seal, with wood storage box. 129.5cm x 49.5cm (51in x 19½in). Busei lived in Edo and studied painting under Tani Buncho (1763-1840). He particularly appreciated old Chinese and Japanese paintings. Although he was a Nanga artist by training, he also painted in the Kano style.
