Nanga School, dated 1918
Kakejiku, in ink on silk, depicting a large waterfall that appears to be cascading from the clouds, the water falling vigorously into its basin where it splashes violently, signed Tsuchinoe-uma shoshu Suiun Chojin (in the beginning of Autumn, in the Year of the Horse [1918]), Suiun Chojin) with seal, with tomobako titled and signed by the artist with seal. 160cm x 51cm (63in x 20 1/8in). Born in Gunma prefecture, Komuro Suiun was a pupil of Tazaki Soun (1815-1898). He was an important late Nanga painter who was reputed for his rich and decorative work. An exhibitor and prize winner at the Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai, he was also an early exhibitor at the Bunten, which he later served as a juror. In 1921, he founded the Nihon Nangain with Yano Kyoson (1890-1965); he was also a member of the Imperial Art Academy and the Art Committee of the Imperial Household.
