Lot 39: KONDRATENKO, GAVRIL

GAVRIL PAVLOVICH KONDRATENKO (RUSSIAN 1854-1924), "Moonlit Winter Evening with Solitary Figure", oil on board, 23 x 14 cm (9 x 5 1/2 in.), signed in Cyrillic lower left and dated 1903. Soloviev's "Russkie Khudozhnik XVIII-XX Vekov" notes in the entry for Kondratenko the artist's fondness for "exotic landscapes," with the "obligatory lighting effects, moonlit nights, and elegant incidental figures" (page 165). Inspection of this painting under UV light shows that while the signature is original to the painting, the date of 1903 was added, or possibly strengthened, later.
