Item Overview

Description

dated 1893, oil on canvas 26 x 35 1/2 in. (66 x 90.1 cm.) The four-masted iron barque "Glenericht" was built by T. Royden & Sons of Liverpool for L.H. MacIntyre, also of that city, in 1885. Registered at 2426 tons gross (2250 net), she measured 289½ feet in length with a 44 foot beam and operated as a general trader, often to India and the Far East, for three successive Liverpool owners until 1907 when she was sold to H. Bode of Hamburg who renamed her "Mariechen". After three years under German colours, she was sold to Robert Mattsson of Mariehamn, one of a small group of Finnish ship-owners led by the far-sighted Gustav Erikson, who, between them, dominated the twilight years of commercial sailing ships between the two World Wars. It suited Mattsson to retain "Mariechen's" new name and, surviving the Great War, during which she was particularly profitable, she became a frequent sight in the Panama Canal in the early 1920s when on passage home from Tocopilla, Chile, carrying cargoes of nitrates. Sold to ship-breakers in 1923, she was scrapped in Holland the same year.
