Item Overview

Description

Lake Placid Club.
AMY JONES (1899-1968)

Cond A-/Slight tears at paper edges.
Though the upstate New York village in the Adirondack Mountains played host to the Winter Olympiad on two occasions, none of that Olympic pomp or circumstance is on display in this Jones poster for the Lake Placid Club, a social and recreation organization founded in 1895 by Melvil Dewey (1851-1931), the originator of the Dewey Decimal System and early promoter of winter sports. At its height in 1923, the Club had expanded to 9,600 acres with a staff of over 1,100. At that time, there were 356 buildings, 110 of which were residences with twenty-one tennis courts and seven golf courses. The oft-exhibited Jones was a painter, muralist, printmaker and illustrator. Born in Buffalo, New York, she studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and would create artwork for Standard Oil of New Jersey, Woman's Day and Random House.
