Notes

Li Shizhuo (1687-1770) was Gao Qipei's (1672-1734) nephew and came from Fengtian in Liaoning. He was good at painting landscapes, figures, flower and birds, and fruits. While traveling with his father in his youth, he met Wang Hui (1632-1717) and had a talk with him, which resulted in his painting style being traditional and delicate. His figures followed the rules of Wu Daozi’s painting, and his flower and birds, fruits and objects were learned from his uncle’s finger paintings. Eventually, he created his own style. In his late years, he favored finger painting for figures. He touched his flower and birds with dry ink to make the colors light and dark. He was able to paint and write regular script in small characters even when he was more than eighty years old.
