Orpheus and the Argonauts. Oil on card. 40,5 x 58cm. Dated lower right: 1838. Framed.

Together with his father Johann Peter von Langer (1756 - 1824) the DÜsseldorf born artist joined the newly founded Munich Academy as a professor. Both worked in an academic Classicistic style following the model of the great French artists in the circle of Jacques-Louis David. The DÜsseldorfer Kunstmuseum has a preliminary sketch for the present multi-figured work which was made by the father and describes Orpheus.
