Notes

This is a very similar drawing in style to a drawing in Paris, Institut Néerlandais, which bears on the verso an old attribution to the artist, the date 1676, and the location, Overveen, near Haarlem (see Dessins de Paysagistes Hollandais..., exhib. cat., Brussels etc. 1968-9, vol. I, pp. 166-7, cat. no. 164, illus., vol. II, pl. 135). Other drawings attributed to van der Vinne of views near Haarlem are in the Print Rooms of Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden. It is likely that the present sheet was drawn in the dunes between Haarlem and the sea.

The drawing style of this member of the van der Vinne dynasty is markedly influenced by that of his teacher, Nicolaes Berchem. The composition of the present sheet is reminiscent of Pieter Molyn, to whom it was formerly attributed.
