Notre tableau, peint en 1804, fait partie d'un cycle
de Quatre éléments qui aurait pu être destiné
au futur projet de musée de Turin. Ce projet
malheureusement n'a pu aboutir à cause de la
volonté de Napoléon de faire passer en priorité les
projets de réameublement du Palais Royal et de
Stupinigi.

Enée (anciennement passé dans une vente à Paris,
Hôtel Drouot, 10 décembre 2003, n° 33, reproduit) ;
La Terre ou Cybèle qui conduit dans son char les
quatre saisons (anciennement passé dans une vente
à Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 10 décembre 2003, n° 33,
reproduit) ;
L'Eau ou Le Triomphe d'Amphitrite et de Neptune
(Vente anonyme, Versailles, Chevau Legers, n° 136
et aujourd'hui dans une collection italienne) ;
L'Air ou Junon sollicitant Eole d'agiter les vents contre
la fltte d'Enée et exciter la tempête.
Cette suite de grands formats, très librement
inspirée du cycle de Francesco Albani conservé à
Turin jusqu'à sa saisie par Napoléon et aujourd'hui
conservé au Louvre, est la dernière grande
entreprise mythologique de Laurent Pécheux.
Pécheux arrive à Rome en 1752-1753, à l'âge de
24 ans. Il évolue dans le cercle artistique de
Pompeo Batoni, son ainé de vingt ans et de son
contemporain et disciple Anton Raphael Mengs
et travaille pour de prestigieux commanditaires,
les familles Borghèse et Barberini et Catherine II
de Russie. Il accepte en 1777 la charge de Premier
Peintre du roi de Sardaigne et quitte Rome pour
Turin. Après la prise de Turin par les français
en 1798, Pécheux, au plus fort de son activité est
nommé « Peintre de la Nation », et membre de
l'Académie des sciences, littérature et beaux-arts
en 1801.

SMALL ITEMS purchased at auction and not collected after the sale will be transported to the PIASA offices and kept free of charge for a fortnight.
Thereafter the purchaser will be charged storage costs at the rate of € 3 + tax, per day and per lot.

INSURANCE
At the fall of the hammer the title of property shall be transferred to the purchaser, who assumes immediate responsibility for insurance. Uncollected property will be stored at the buyer's risk and expense.
