Notes

Lawrence Jones was born in Lynchburg, VA. After high school he traveled to Chicago and earned a scholarship at the Chicago Art Institute. Afterwards he was employed at Dillard University in New Orleans and worked on the WPA Federal Art Program in Louisiana. Jones went on to create and develop the Department of Fine Arts at Jackson State University, the first such department established for blacks in the South.
