LE GANGNEUR, Guillaume (ca 1553-ca 1624). La rizographie ou les sources, elemens, & perfecçions de l'ecritture italiene. Paris: [ca 1600]. Oblong 4o (188 x 278 mm). Engraved title and 31 calligraphic plates by Simon Frisius. Four leaves letterpress, including the scarce "Extraict des Registres de Parlement." (Some occasional pale staining.) Old marbled wrappers. Provenance: acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1981. FIRST EDITION. Le Gangneur, scribe in the King's Chamber, was granted a privilege to publish three writing manuals on 1 October 1599, of which this is the second. Along with Jean Beaugrand, Le Gangneur was considered one of the best calligraphers of his day. Becker, The Practice of Letters 44; Bonancini 1040.
