Intermittendly, Leman studied between 1904 and circa 1922 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Münzer and Gebhardt. In 1922 he joined the group "Das Junge Rheinland" [The Young Rhineland]. Until 1936 he travelled Europe and met artists Wollheim, Jupp Bell, and Johanna Ey while staying in Mallorca in 1927. After his exclusion from the Kulturkammer under the Nationalsocialists, he withdrew to Mallorca which became his second home.
