He studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Art in the college of education. In 1939 he was sent to Russia by the army. In the Crimea (Krim) he was wounded and was sent back home. (fotos from this time are in possession of the "Heeresgeschichtliche Museum" - museum of army history) By the end of the war he walked by foot from Jugoslavia to Eastern Tyrol, where his wife and his son Klaus Leopold, born 1942 stayed In 1946 his second son Kurt Georg was born. Leopold Jahn started to work as photographer, painter and graphic artist (when he was only 10 years old he built a camera on his own and with this camera he shot his first photo) and he published a book with photos from Eastern Tyrol. With his photos and his paintings he took part in several exhibitions together with other artists and he also had many single exhibitions. 1951 he and his family went back to Vienna, where he started to work as a teacher again, but continued to work also as a photographer and painter. He took photos from Vienna after the war (Nachkriegs-Wien). He shot some spectacular photos from the renovation of the almost completely ruined St. Stephans-cathedral (Stefansdom). He was asked to do so by the office of monument-protection (Denkmalschutzamt) - (this photos are in the "Wien-Museum", museum of Vienna)

As an artist he of course made photos of his artist friends. Some of them are: Prof. Carl Unger, painter; Heinz Leinfellner, sculptor; Prof. Wander Bertoni, sculptor; Maria Biljan-Pilger, ceramicist; Peter Perz, designer und graphic artist; Lotte Prohfos, painter; Helmut Leherb, painter and sculptor, one of the founder of the school of phantastic realism (Schule des Phantastischen Realismus); Kurt Moldovan, graphic artist and painter; Rudolf Hoflehner, painter and sculptor; Roland Pleterski, fashion photographer; Friedrich Kurrent, Professor and architectual theoretician (Architekturtheoretiker).

His photos from these artists are in the museum of Vienna (Wien-Museum) In 1957 he published a book about Portugal and in 1973 a book about Ludwig Boltzmann in the publishing company youth and folk (Verlag Jugend und Volk). He took Photos for catalogues, made photo reportages of the Balkan peninsula and Italy. He also worked for the "Österreich Illustrierte" (an Austrian newspaper), the Upper-Austrian news (Oberösterreichische Nachrichten), the Austrian publishing company (den Österreichischen Verlag), radio Austria (Radio Österreich), and also for the Agentur Magnum and the southgerman publishing company (Süddeutschen Verlag). Until his retirement he worked as a teacher of art, mathematics and chemics in public schools in Vienna. Then he got very interested in Macrophotographie. He was most interested in chemical substances and the form of crystals within this substances and he took the most amazing photos. With this he worked together with large industrial companies, like Schoeller-Bleckmann, Wagner Biro and others.
