Born in Yunnan, Liao was a sculptor and painter who went to France in 1934 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under the tutelage of Boucher and later Goumont. His delicate paintings reveal both his Oriental and Occidental training. He was invited to participate in the Salon d'Automne and was awarded the gold medal in 1946.
