Item Overview

Description

SCULPTURE- Original plaster Life Portrait Bust of Abraham Lincoln executed by Thomas Dow Jones (Ohio, 1811-1881), dated 1861. Jones was grantied sittings by Lincoln at his home in Springfield before he departed for Washington, DC to assume the Presidency. The original clay modello served as the basis for two marble busts, (which reside in the White House and Capitol Building) and a handful of plaster casts, which are held in great esteem, as represented by the fact that the mate to this is on display in the National Gallery. The bust is notable for its vivid likeness, which captures both Lincoln's rugged features and humanity. It is the only life portrait of Lincoln to depict him in a good humor. Signed 'T. Jones Sculpt 1861'. Life portrait busts of Lincoln are vitually unobtainable in the marketplace. Lightly overpainted at an early date, or perhaps as an original finish. 33" tall.
